At Safi, every necklace is made using materials we choose for their durability, quality and overall feel. We want every piece to feel special the moment you wear it and stay beautiful over time. This guide breaks down the materials we use, why we chose them and what makes them stand out.
Gold-Filled Components
Gold-filled is the star of our materials and for a good reason. Unlike gold-plated items, which have only a micro-thin layer of gold that can wear off quickly, gold-filled materials are made through a heat-and-pressure bonding process. A thick layer of real 14k gold (at least 5% of the metal’s total weight and over 100x more than gold-plating) is mechanically bonded to a brass core. This means the gold won’t simply “rub off” or fade the way plating does.
Because of this unique construction, gold-filled pieces are:
- Highly tarnish-resistant
- Much more durable than plated alternatives
- Water-friendly for normal, everyday wear
- Hypoallergenic and safe for most sensitive skin
With proper care, gold-filled jewelry can last years and maintain that rich, warm gold tone that looks expensive. It offers the perfect balance of quality which is exactly why it’s our go-to for clasps, chains and finishing details.
Czech Glass Beads
Czech glass beads are small works of art. These beads are known worldwide for their clarity and vibrant colors. The glass is melted, pressed, cut and polished with incredible precision, which gives Czech glass its smooth finish and luxurious appearance.
We choose Czech glass because it adds color, shine and personality to our designs without sacrificing quality. They’re durable for everyday wear and light enough to keep our necklaces comfortable and easy to style.
Freshwater Pearls
Freshwater pearls form naturally inside mussels as layers of nacre build up. This slow process creates pearls that vary in shape, size and surface details. Unlike perfectly round saltwater pearls, freshwater pearls often come in softer, more irregular forms, which gives them an organic look. And because every pearl grows differently, no two are ever the same. Each one brings its own small variations, making every Safi piece naturally unique.
The appearance of the pearls can vary depending on factors like water temperature, the mussel species and how long the pearl was allowed to grow.
Pearls are also sensitive to their environment. They should avoid harsh chemicals and prolonged dryness, but they benefit from natural skin oils, which is why many pearls actually develop a deeper, richer sheen the more they're worn. This aging process is gradual and considered part of their charm.
